Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as gingivitis, is caused by long-term exposure to plaque. Usually, the patient suspects problems because he or she may be experiencing the following symptoms: bad breath, tender or painful swollen gums, and minor bleeding after brushing or flossing. Many times, we find that the patient is not even aware that gum disease is present until a hygiene appointment reveals the problem.
Gingivitis should be treated upon diagnosis so that further infection, decay or tooth loss can be avoided. We usually schedule our patients for scaling and root planing to help the gums heal and reattach to the tooth structure. Scaling and root planing also prevents any further tooth loss or pain.
Our office can set up a treatment plan for you that will allow us the opportunity to work with you to stop or slow down the progression of gum disease.
